Fabric: Vinyl sourced locally at Field's Fabrics, durable for toddlers yet soft on the inside
1) This was my first time sewing with vinyl/leather-like materials.
2) I read into it a little, made sure I had the right kind of needle, read horror stories about materials like this getting stuck to the dog feeds, or your foot getting stuck to the material...yes, I was very, very afraid...
But enough of that spooky stuff, these mocs were a piece of pie! This pattern is a great place to start for making baby shoes. I didn't have any issues with the fabric, though it isn't the easiest kind in the world to sew with. I would put the difficulty at an intermediate sewing level mostly due to dealing with the fabric, though if you're an ambitious/advanced beginner you'll be just fine (mind over matter!) The type of leather/vinyl/suede I'm sure makes a huge difference too, so if you want to start out with a fabric that is more pliable and work your way up to something more substantial, that may be the way to go. I haven't tried any other fabrics, so get out there an experiment with some and find what you like best!
Before trying this pattern, I would have said shoe-making was not in my wheelhouse and was not necessarily something I enjoyed - but I am head-over-heels for the end result! So add this to my baby pants addiction. I found this fabulous silvery-gold vinyl locally at Field's Fabrics here in Holland, MI. It is nice and soft on the inside, so I didn't even have to do a lining fabric. Nothing like a pretty neutral with a fringe texture to make the world a happier place!
One more thing, and I know I've mentioned this several times in my last few posts, but I can't share it enough: Check out Peek-a-Boo Pattern Shop's facebook group if you love sewing for the little humans in your life. It is such an awesome community headed up by a talented and helpful pattern designer/mom/sewist. You will be inspired there, and can ask for help on the patterns you're sewing up from PAB, and see what other people are making.
Thanks for stopping by!
